DESCRIPTION:Scentinel Nose Work Dog Training is sponsoring Janice Ritter in offering a Six Week Course and a Four Week Course on "Layering in a Default Behavior," in Harvard, MA, starting Wednesday, January 31, 2018.
Six Week Course: Detection Dog Training is all about communication. In training, we condition a dog to hunt for, and to find, a target odor and then to communicate that find to handler. In training, the handler learns to read the dog’s “changes of behavior” which communicate to the handler that the dog has “reached source.” However, if the dog’s communication is too fleeting (for many reasons) or if you simply are not able to “read” your dog’s “changes of behavior,” then it makes it difficult for you to “know” if you are dog is “at source.” This Six Week Course is geared toward developing the “handler’s eye” and to encourage your dog to "stick more to source” when your dog does make a find. We will do that by making the “find” more and more valuable to the dog. And, while we do not teach an indication in Nose Work, we will focus on “capturing” a default behavior (with a special emphasis on the “focused nose lock” or “freeze) which your dog can use to “demand to paid.” In order to achieve this latter goal, the first four weeks of the Six Week Course will be spent on one specific piece of equipment.
Four Week Course: The Four Week Course further encourages the develop of clear communication between the handler and the dog by utilizing different pieces of training equipment which elicit a default behavior in the dog and which help build duration into the default behavior. At the end of this Four Week Course, the dog will be asked to perform some Interior NW1 level searching with the hope that the dog will show much more odor obedience and commitment to scent source. A prerequisite for taking the Four Week Course is to have successfully completed the Six Week Course.
PREREQUISITES:
Dog must be on all three odors (birch, anise and clove).
Dog must be able to be staged outside in personal vehicle (engine running with heat on is fine).

INSTRUCTOR:
Janice Ritter: Janice is a professional dog trainer who trains in many dog sports. Nosework has been her passion since the day it began on the East Coast, and Janice earned her ANWI after taking NACSW Instructor’s Training Courses.
Her dog “Saju” earned his NACSW NW2 and his Performance Scent Dogs SDA (Scent Dog Advanced) with many wins and placements. Additionally, Saju is trained to detect Narcotics. Saju also works in Rally Obedience where 1st place and perfect scores are his norm in both AKC and WCRL competition. To round out his life, Saju trains for obedience and Trick Dog titles.
Janice’s young dog “Vindi” captured both her NACSW NW1 and NW2 with the coveted “Pronounced” designation, earning a 3rd place and 4th place Overall berth for those titles, respectively. Vindi also has achieved her NACSW Container and Exterior Element titles. Vindi is almost finished with her PSD SDA title, winning or placing in most of those trials. Vindi trains in obedience, Rally, Trick Dog, and enjoys jumping off of docks for fun. Janice and both dogs will be pursuing NW3 and PSD Excellent titles in 2018.
Not content with training just her own dogs, Janice has also titled client dogs in Nosework. Her client dogs “Bella” and “Axel” each earned their NW1 titles on the first try. This was notable because Janice trained both dogs only once a week, in class with Gail McCarthy! Axel will continue on to compete for his NW2 and for PSD titles this year. Janice loves teaching and coaching handlers and dogs in the art of scent detection.
Her Nosework students are excelling in NACSW, PSD, USCSS and even AKC’s new scent work arena! She teaches Nosework through her business “A Better Way Dog Training” in Waltham, MA and occasionally in other venues.
For More Information and Registration, please follow the electronic registration instructions for this event in the section of this website entitled “Registration for Workshops and Off-Site Trainings.” Or, email Janice at jritter3@verizon.net. All dogs registering need to be independently hunting for all three odors (birch, anise and clove). Space is limited. Please note that these Courses will go forward unless cancelled by the Instructor. No refunds will be made after Thursday, January 25, 2018 and only if a written cancellation request was received by the Instructor prior to Thursday, January 25, 2018. Cancellation requests made on or after Thursday, January 25, 2018 will be honored only if there is a handler available to take the spot from a Wait List.
So, come join us for an informative and fun Training!!
